Description

Hot Water Cornbread is a quick and easy Southern-style cornbread that is fried to golden perfection. Made with simple ingredients like cornmeal, boiling water, and a touch of sugar, this crispy and comforting bread is perfect as a side dish or snack.

Ingredients

Scale

Dry Ingredients

  • 2 cups cornmeal
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon sugar (optional)

Wet Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups boiling water

For Frying

  • Vegetable oil for frying (enough to be 1/2 inch deep in skillet)

Instructions

  1. Mix Dry Ingredients: In a large bowl, combine the cornmeal, salt, and sugar (if using). Stir well to evenly distribute the ingredients.
  2. Add Boiling Water: Gradually pour the boiling water into the cornmeal mixture, stirring continuously until the mixture is fully moistened and thickened.
  3. Heat Oil: Pour vegetable oil into a skillet, heating it over medium-high heat until the oil is about 1/2 inch deep and hot enough for frying.
  4. Shape Patties: Using your hands, form the cornmeal mixture into small patties roughly the size of golf balls, flattening them slightly for even cooking.
  5. Fry Patties: Carefully place the patties into the hot oil. Fry for about 2-3 minutes on each side, or until golden brown and crispy.
  6. Drain and Serve: Remove the fried cornbread from the oil and place on paper towels to drain excess oil. Serve warm for best flavor.

Notes

  • You can omit sugar to make the cornbread less sweet.
  • Be careful when handling boiling water to avoid burns.
  • Adjust the heat as needed to prevent burning and ensure even frying.
  • Use a slotted spoon for easier removal of patties from hot oil.
  • For a gluten-free diet, ensure your cornmeal is certified gluten-free.
