Description

This Classic Patty Melt recipe features juicy, seasoned ground beef patties topped with sweet caramelized onions and melted Swiss or cheddar cheese, grilled between buttery rye or sourdough bread slices. It’s a nostalgic diner-style sandwich perfect for a hearty lunch or dinner, delivering a satisfying blend of savory flavors and crispy texture in just 35 minutes.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Beef Patties

  • 1 lb (450 g) ground beef
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • Salt and pepper to taste

For the Caramelized Onions

  • 2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • Pinch of sugar (optional)

For the Sandwich Assembly

  • 4 slices rye or sourdough bread
  • 4 slices Swiss or cheddar cheese
  • 2 tablespoons butter (for toasting)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Patties: In a mixing bowl, combine the ground beef with garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Mix gently until incorporated without overworking the meat. Shape the mixture into 2 large patties, slightly larger than your bread slices to account for shrinkage during cooking.
  2. Caramelize the Onions: Heat the butter and olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add the thinly sliced onions and cook, stirring occasionally, for 15 to 20 minutes until they turn golden and soft. If desired, add a pinch of sugar midway to enhance sweetness. Remove from heat once caramelized.
  3. Cook the Patties: In the same skillet, increase heat to medium-high and cook the patties for about 3 to 4 minutes per side, or until they reach your preferred level of doneness. Remove patties from the skillet and set aside.
  4. Assemble the Sandwiches: Butter one side of each bread slice generously. On the unbuttered side of two bread slices, layer a slice of cheese, a cooked beef patty, a generous portion of caramelized onions, and another slice of cheese. Top with the remaining bread slices, buttered side facing out.
  5. Grill the Patty Melts: Heat a clean skillet or griddle over medium heat. Place the assembled sandwiches on the skillet and grill for 3 to 4 minutes per side, pressing down lightly with a spatula. Grill until the bread is golden brown and crispy and the cheese is fully melted.
  6. Serve: Slice each sandwich in half and serve hot with your choice of sides such as fries, pickles, or a fresh salad.

Notes

  • Using a mix of rye and sourdough bread provides a nice tangy and hearty flavor for the sandwich.
  • Caramelizing the onions slowly ensures they develop a deep, sweet flavor rather than burning.
  • Butter the bread generously to achieve a crispy, golden crust when grilling.
  • To prevent the patties from shrinking too much, avoid overworking the meat when mixing and shaping.
  • For a different twist, experiment with Swiss or cheddar cheese based on your preference.
