Ingredients
- 2 cups whole milk
- 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 tablespoon unsalted butter
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/8 teaspoon salt
- Powdered sugar for dusting (optional)
Instructions
- Combine Ingredients: In a heavy bottom saucepan, combine the whole milk, granulated sugar, and baking soda. Place over medium heat and stir constantly until the sugar fully dissolves.
- Cook Mixture: Continue cooking the mixture, stirring frequently to prevent burning, until it thickens and turns a light caramel color, approximately 20 to 25 minutes.
- Thicken Further: Reduce heat to low and keep stirring as the mixture becomes thicker and begins to pull away slightly from the sides of the pan.
- Add Flavorings: Stir in the unsalted butter, vanilla extract, and salt until fully incorporated, ensuring a smooth texture.
- Cool Slightly: Remove the saucepan from heat and allow the mixture to cool until it is thick but still spreadable.
- Set the Candy: Lightly grease a small baking dish or line with parchment paper. Spread the mixture evenly to about 1/2 inch thickness.
- Let Firm: Let the candy cool completely at room temperature until firm enough to cut.
