Description

Canillitas de Leche is a traditional Dominican milk candy with a soft, fudge-like texture. Made from whole milk, sugar, and a few simple ingredients, this sweet treat is cooked on the stovetop until it thickens and turns a light caramel color. Perfect for dessert or a sweet snack, these milk fudge candies are easy to prepare and offer a delightful melt-in-your-mouth experience.

Ingredients

Scale

Ingredients

  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt
  • Powdered sugar for dusting (optional)

Instructions

  1. Combine Ingredients: In a heavy bottom saucepan, combine the whole milk, granulated sugar, and baking soda. Place over medium heat and stir constantly until the sugar fully dissolves.
  2. Cook Mixture: Continue cooking the mixture, stirring frequently to prevent burning, until it thickens and turns a light caramel color, approximately 20 to 25 minutes.
  3. Thicken Further: Reduce heat to low and keep stirring as the mixture becomes thicker and begins to pull away slightly from the sides of the pan.
  4. Add Flavorings: Stir in the unsalted butter, vanilla extract, and salt until fully incorporated, ensuring a smooth texture.
  5. Cool Slightly: Remove the saucepan from heat and allow the mixture to cool until it is thick but still spreadable.
  6. Set the Candy: Lightly grease a small baking dish or line with parchment paper. Spread the mixture evenly to about 1/2 inch thickness.
  7. Let Firm: Let the candy cool completely at room temperature until firm enough to cut.
  8. Cut and Serve: Once set, cut into small stick-shaped pieces. Optionally dust with powdered sugar before serving.
