Description
Create dazzling, sparkling borax crystal flowers easily with this fun and educational craft project. Using simple household items like pipe cleaners, borax powder, and boiling water, you can grow beautiful crystalline blooms in just over 12 hours. This activity is perfect for kids and adults alike, blending creativity with a bit of science.
Ingredients
Materials Needed
- Pipe cleaners: bright colors work best, quantity as desired for number of flowers
- String or fishing line: enough to suspend each flower in the jar
- Pencil or chopstick: 1, to suspend flowers over the jar opening
- Large glass jar (heat-safe, such as a mason jar): 1 per flower or combined if large enough
Solution Ingredients
- Borax powder: 3 tablespoons per 1 cup boiling water
- Boiling water: 1 cup per flower
- Food coloring (optional): 2–3 drops per solution, for vibrant colored crystals
Instructions
- Shape Your Flowers: Twist pipe cleaners into your desired simple flower shapes, such as roses, daisies, or abstract designs. Make sure to leave spaces between petals and loops to allow crystals to grow effectively.
- Suspend Them: Tie a piece of string or fishing line securely around each flower. Attach the other end of the string to a pencil or chopstick, which will rest across the top of the jar, ensuring the flowers hang freely inside without touching the sides or bottom.
- Mix the Magic Solution: Boil water and pour 1 cup into each jar. Stir in 3 tablespoons of borax powder per cup until fully dissolved to create a saturated solution. Optionally, add 2–3 drops of food coloring and swirl gently to distribute the color.
- Submerge & Wait: Lower the suspended flowers carefully into the borax solution, making sure they are completely submerged without touching the jar. Let the jars sit undisturbed overnight (at least 12 hours) to allow crystals to form and grow densely on the pipe cleaners.
- Reveal & Dry: The next morning, gently lift out your crystal-coated flowers from the solution. Tap off any excess crystals and place the flowers on a paper towel to air-dry completely before displaying or handling.
Notes
- Use bright colored pipe cleaners for the most visually striking crystal formations.
- Ensure the flowers do not touch the sides or bottom of the jar to allow even crystal growth.
- The borax solution should be freshly made and hot for best crystal development.
- Adult supervision recommended when handling boiling water and borax, as it is a chemical substance.
- Experiment with different shapes and sizes for varied results.
