Ingredients
Scale
Biscuits
- 1 can (16.3 oz) refrigerated biscuit dough
Sausage Gravy
- 1 lb breakfast sausage
- 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
- 2 cups whole milk
- 1/4 tsp black pepper (or to taste)
Egg Mixture
- 6 large eggs
Optional Toppings
- 1/4 cup shredded cheddar cheese
- 1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley (for garnish)
Instructions
- Preheat and Prepare Dish: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish to ensure the casserole doesn’t stick during baking.
- Prepare Biscuit Layer: Cut the refrigerated biscuit dough into quarters. Spread half of these biscuit pieces evenly across the bottom of the greased baking dish.
- Cook Sausage: In a skillet over medium heat, cook the breakfast sausage until browned and fully cooked, about 6-8 minutes. Drain any excess fat from the skillet to avoid greasy gravy.
- Make Sausage Gravy: Sprinkle the all-purpose flour over the cooked sausage and stir well. Gradually add the whole milk while stirring continuously until the gravy thickens. Season the gravy with black pepper to taste.
- Layer Gravy: Pour half of the thickened sausage gravy evenly over the biscuits arranged in the baking dish.
- Add Egg Mixture: In a bowl, whisk the eggs until well blended. Pour the eggs evenly over the gravy layer in the baking dish.
- Top Casserole: Spread the remaining biscuit quarters over the eggs and pour the remaining sausage gravy over them. If desired, sprinkle shredded cheddar cheese evenly on top for added flavor and richness.
- Bake: Place the casserole in the preheated oven and bake for 30-35 minutes, or until the biscuits are golden brown and the casserole is set.
- Rest and Garnish: Allow the casserole to rest for 5 minutes after baking. Garnish with chopped fresh parsley before serving warm to enhance both flavor and presentation.
Notes
- You can use any type of breakfast sausage according to preference, such as spicy or mild.
- For a lighter version, substitute whole milk with 2% milk or a milk alternative.
- Shredded cheddar cheese is optional but adds a nice cheesy flavor and texture.
- Leftovers can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days and reheated in the oven or microwave.
- Make sure to drain excess fat from sausage to prevent greasy gravy.
- Adjust black pepper to taste depending on desired spice level.
