Description

A comforting and hearty Biscuits and Gravy Breakfast Casserole featuring flaky biscuit dough layered with savory sausage gravy and baked to golden perfection, making it a perfect make-ahead breakfast or brunch dish.

Ingredients

Scale

Biscuits

  • 1 can (16.3 oz) refrigerated biscuit dough

Sausage Gravy

  • 1 lb breakfast sausage
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper (or to taste)

Egg Mixture

  • 6 large eggs

Optional Toppings

  • 1/4 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley (for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Preheat and Prepare Dish: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish to ensure the casserole doesn’t stick during baking.
  2. Prepare Biscuit Layer: Cut the refrigerated biscuit dough into quarters. Spread half of these biscuit pieces evenly across the bottom of the greased baking dish.
  3. Cook Sausage: In a skillet over medium heat, cook the breakfast sausage until browned and fully cooked, about 6-8 minutes. Drain any excess fat from the skillet to avoid greasy gravy.
  4. Make Sausage Gravy: Sprinkle the all-purpose flour over the cooked sausage and stir well. Gradually add the whole milk while stirring continuously until the gravy thickens. Season the gravy with black pepper to taste.
  5. Layer Gravy: Pour half of the thickened sausage gravy evenly over the biscuits arranged in the baking dish.
  6. Add Egg Mixture: In a bowl, whisk the eggs until well blended. Pour the eggs evenly over the gravy layer in the baking dish.
  7. Top Casserole: Spread the remaining biscuit quarters over the eggs and pour the remaining sausage gravy over them. If desired, sprinkle shredded cheddar cheese evenly on top for added flavor and richness.
  8. Bake: Place the casserole in the preheated oven and bake for 30-35 minutes, or until the biscuits are golden brown and the casserole is set.
  9. Rest and Garnish: Allow the casserole to rest for 5 minutes after baking. Garnish with chopped fresh parsley before serving warm to enhance both flavor and presentation.

Notes

  • You can use any type of breakfast sausage according to preference, such as spicy or mild.
  • For a lighter version, substitute whole milk with 2% milk or a milk alternative.
  • Shredded cheddar cheese is optional but adds a nice cheesy flavor and texture.
  • Leftovers can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days and reheated in the oven or microwave.
  • Make sure to drain excess fat from sausage to prevent greasy gravy.
  • Adjust black pepper to taste depending on desired spice level.
